🔓 Ungating Guide
One of the biggest barriers new sellers face is ungating — getting Amazon’s approval to sell in certain categories and brands. Some products and categories are “gated” (restricted), meaning you can’t list them until Amazon approves your application.
What is Gating?
Amazon restricts certain categories and brands to maintain quality and prevent counterfeits. If you try to list a product in a gated category, you’ll see a message saying “You need approval to sell in this category” or “This product requires approval”.
There are two types of restrictions:
- Category gates — entire categories like Grocery, Beauty, Health & Personal Care, Toys (seasonal)
- Brand gates — specific brands like LEGO, Nike, Apple, etc. that require authorisation regardless of category
Which Categories Are Gated?
The main gated categories on Amazon UK include:
| Category | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grocery & Gourmet | Medium | Need invoices from approved suppliers |
| Health & Personal Care | Medium | One of the most profitable once ungated |
| Beauty | Medium | Similar requirements to Health & Personal Care |
| Toys & Games | Seasonal | Gated around Q4 (Christmas). Apply early |
| Topicals | Hard | Lotions, creams etc. — strict requirements |
| Jewellery | Medium | Need invoices showing authenticity |
| Watches | Hard | Brand-specific approvals often needed too |
| Clothing & Shoes | Easy-Medium | Relatively straightforward with invoices |
Note: Gating requirements change frequently. A category that was easy to get into six months ago might now need more documentation. Always check the current requirements in Seller Central.
How to Get Ungated
The process is broadly the same for most categories:
Step 1: Get a Professional Seller Account
You need a Professional account (£25/month) — you cannot apply for ungating on an Individual plan.
Step 2: Gather Your Invoices
This is the key part. Amazon wants to see invoices proving you’re sourcing legitimate products. The requirements:
- Invoice from a legitimate supplier (not a retail receipt from Tesco)
- Must show at least 10 units of a product in the gated category (some brands require 100 units — SAS will tell you which)
- Must be dated within the last 365 days
- Must show the supplier’s name, address, and contact details
- Must show your name/business name and address
- Must include product names that match the Amazon listing
Pro tip: You don’t need all the units on a single invoice. You can submit multiple invoices together for different products from the same brand, and Amazon will add up the totals. So if you need 10 units of a brand and you have one invoice for 4 units and another for 6 units of different items from that brand, that counts. This makes hitting the required total much easier and cheaper.
Step 3: Apply in Seller Central
- Search for a product in the gated category
- Click “Listing Limitations Apply” or the “Request Approval” button
- Upload your invoices when prompted
- Submit and wait — Amazon typically responds within 24-72 hours
Step 4: Wait (and Potentially Re-Apply)
- Auto-approved: Some categories will approve you instantly, especially if your account is in good standing
- Manual review: Amazon reviews your invoices and either approves or rejects
- Rejected? Don’t panic — read the rejection reason, fix the issue, and reapply
Where to Get Invoices for Ungating
This is the question everyone asks. Here are the main approaches:
1. Wholesale Suppliers
The most legitimate route. Contact wholesalers/distributors for the category you want:
- Grocery: Find food & drink wholesalers, cash & carries
- Health & Beauty: Contact health/beauty distributors or brands directly
- Toys: Toy wholesalers/distributors
You usually need to open a trade account and place a minimum order. The invoice from this order is what you submit to Amazon.
2. Specialist Ungating Suppliers
Some suppliers specifically cater to Amazon sellers needing invoices. They sell small quantities in gated categories at reasonable prices. Ask in the Money Masters community for current recommendations — these change regularly.
3. Brands Direct
Contact brands directly and ask to open a retail/wholesale account. This is harder but gets you both the invoice AND a supplier relationship for future stock.
Tips for Successful Ungating Applications
- Start with easier categories first — Clothing and Grocery are generally easier than Topicals or Watches
- Make sure your invoices are clean — clear, professional, with all the required information. Blurry photos or missing details = rejection
- Use a business name — having a registered business (even a sole trader) looks more professional than a personal name
- Don’t fake invoices — Amazon will verify. Getting caught with fraudulent documents can get your account permanently suspended
- Be patient — some categories take multiple attempts. Each rejection usually tells you what to fix
- Keep your account healthy — good metrics (no late shipments, good reviews, low defect rate) help your applications
Brand Ungating
Brand ungating is separate from category ungating. Even if you’re approved for the Toys category, you might still need specific approval to sell LEGO.
Brand ungating typically requires:
- An invoice from the brand itself or an authorised distributor
- Sometimes a letter of authorisation from the brand
- Proof you’re an authorised reseller
Some brands are extremely difficult to get ungated for (Apple, Nike, etc.) and many sellers simply avoid them. Others are easier — it varies enormously.
Pro tip: Don’t spend weeks trying to get ungated for a difficult brand when there are thousands of profitable products in categories and brands you CAN sell in. Ungating is a means to an end — focus on actually selling and making money, and tackle harder gates as you grow.
The Mobile App Trick (Auto Ungates)
This is one of the best-kept secrets in FBA. When you’re gated for a brand on the desktop Seller Central website, try adding the ASIN to your inventory via the Amazon Seller mobile app instead. In many cases, the mobile app will automatically ungate you for that brand — no invoices needed.
On the desktop website, the same product would show “You need approval to sell” and ask you to submit invoices. But through the mobile app, it just… lets you list it.
This doesn’t work for every brand or category, but it works for a surprising number of them. It’s always worth trying the mobile app first before going through the invoice process.
We’ve put together a dedicated Auto Ungates Guide with more detail on how this works and tips for making the most of it.
Common Ungating Mistakes
- Using retail receipts instead of proper invoices — Amazon wants supplier invoices, not Boots receipts
- Not meeting the minimum quantity — if they ask for 10 units, show 10+ units on the invoice
- Applying before your account is ready — have some sales history and good metrics first
- Giving up after one rejection — read the feedback, fix the issue, try again
- Spending too much on ungating stock — you don’t need to order £500 of stock just to get an invoice. Find suppliers with low minimum orders
